US Travel Outlook Bright
NEW YORK, NY – Despite a threatening economic forecast, 75% of Americans are planning to spend at least as much on leisure travel this year as they did last year.
According to survey from Deloitte, 93% of respondents claimed to have taken a leisure or vacation trip in the past year, and one in six (16%) said they took four or more.
In contrast, a Deloitte travel survey in 2005 found that only 85% had taken a leisure trip in the previous year.
And there is no sign of a slowdown.
For the 2007 holiday season, almost two-thirds (63%) of those surveyed plan to travel between Thanksgiving and New Year’s—and another third (32%) plan on taking two or more trips in that period.
For 31% of these travelers that represents an increase over last year’s holiday season travel plans.
“Many of these trips are part of emerging niche travel segments,” said Adam Weissenberg of Deloitte. “Almost half say they would like to, or currently do, take ‘adventure travel’ trips, and more than one-quarter would like to, or already do, participate in volunteer travel, where they do good while being away.”
Internet usage continues to affect the travel industry, too, with 83% of respondents saying they used the Internet to research or purchase travel in the past 12 months, primarily for flights and lodging.
The vast majority of consumers (87%) plan to use the Internet at least as much in the coming year, primarily because they find it easier and more convenient—or believe they get better prices.
Of the respondents who reported that they will use the Internet less next year, most attribute the decreased usage to a decrease in travel plans.
