NEW YORK, NY – Smartphones are expected to achieve a 22% market share of the global mobile phone market in 2008, according to a January ROA Group report "Mobile Device Market Trends in 2008."

The report highlights a number of key upcoming trends in the global mobile marketplace.

ROA expects competition to heat up in the mobile operating system market as the use of mobile Linux grows.

Mobile user interfaces will increase in sophistication as a way to differentiate between phones and services. Therefore, mergers between handset vendors and user interface companies are predicted.

The use of touchscreeen displays will expand in 2008.

GPS-enabled handsets will also multiply along with location-based services, which ROA sees emerging as "the new killer application."
