Prepare to Be Awed by the Virginia Arts Festival in Newport News, May 14-17

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – From a live taping of one of National Public Radio's most popular programs, "From the Top," to world-renowned banjo player Béla Fleck, see it all in Newport News, Virginia this May as part of the internationally-known Virginia Arts Festival. This year, Newport News hosts performances from May 14 through May 17, 2008 at the incredible Ferguson Center for the Arts, and invites all groups to join us for this wonderful celebration of world-class talent.

Now in its 12th spectacular season, the Virginia Arts Festival once again features a stellar line-up of diverse performances during its run from April 18 through May 26, and it all starts with the largest Tattoo in the United States, the Virginia International Tattoo. This year's Tattoo, April 18-20, was recently awarded the American Bus Association's prestigious "Internationally Known Event" designation as one of the "Top 100 Events in North America." In addition to the Virginia International Tattoo, more than 40 events, including theatre, music, dance, musical theatre and special performances are scheduled throughout the region.

Featured Newport News events start May 14, when groups can enjoy acclaimed pianist Christopher O'Riley, and the Miami String Quartet for Coffee Concert IV. Hear gifted artists in chamber masterworks, performed in intimate, acoustically ideal settings, served up with coffee and convivial company. The next evening, O'Riley hosts one of NPR's most popular programs, "From the Top," which makes classical music "wild and fun and crazy" (Los Angeles Times). The show partners gifted young classical musicians with renowned classical artists in radio broadcasts that capture the top-notch musicianship, offbeat humor and insights of America's best rising and established performers. Here's your chance to see a live taping of the show, co-presented with Young Audiences of Virginia and WHRO.

May 16 brings Béla Fleck and Tony Trischka. Hailed as the world's best banjo player, eight-time Grammy Award winner Béla Fleck was bitten by the music bug early – and has never stopped loving music of all kinds. With these guys, you're likely to hear bluegrass mixed with bebop, jazz, pop, country and more, all stirred into a tasty musical stew that makes lifelong fans out of concert attendees. On May 17, Noche Flamenca joins the Newport News lineup. Formed in Spain in 1993, this stunning company has toured the world, preaching the gospel of the mystical, sensual, unforgettable art of flamenco. "The company digs deep into flamenco's dark soul. Singers salute the dancers with husky, caressing tones and harsh calls... the guitarists make the strings of their instruments tremble intricately..." (Village Voice).

From music to museums, art to animals, discover the treasures of Newport News during the 2008 Virginia Arts Festival. For information on group tickets and accommodations, email Todd Swindell, Group Tour Marketing Manager for the Newport News Tourism Development Office.
