Atlanta is Not Gone with the Wind
ATLANTA, GA – Despite the severe storms that swept through the Centennial Olympic Park (COP) corridor of Downtown Atlanta last Friday, the city’s tourism industry has remained intact.
COP and the surrounding area sustained most of the damage. The park, Georgia World Congress Center and the Georgia Dome will remain closed through the end of this week. However, attractions immediately surrounding the area were unharmed, including the Georgia Aquarium, New World of Coca-Cola and Imagine It! The Children's Museum of Atlanta. The Inside CNN Studio Tour at CNN Center had minor damage to the roof, but reopened on Tuesday.
Our hotels experienced little or no damage. The Omni Hotel at CNN Center is fully operational with the exception of 467 rooms located in the South Tower, which will reopen in two weeks. The building has been declared structurally sound and all guest rooms in the North Tower, all meeting space, the lobby and restaurant are operating. The Westin Peachtree Plaza experienced damage to approximately 150 hotel rooms and is fully operational. According to Mark Vaughan, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB), Atlanta currently has 91,400 usable hotel rooms out of an inventory of 92,000.
“The damage was really to a confined area of Downtown,” said Spurgeon Richardson, president and CEO of ACVB. “Our attractions, restaurants and hotels are all open for business. People want to come to Atlanta and we are going to accommodate them.”
