Study: Ohio Wine Industry Thriving

BENNINGTON, VT – A study commissioned by the Ohio State University has found that the wine industry along Northeast Ohio's Lake Erie has developed into a top draw for tourists. The study included 131 visitor interviews in July and October of last year, with about 89 percent of participants saying that wineries were the primary reason for their visit to the area. It concluded that tourists visited an average of 3.93 wineries per visit to the state, and bought about 3.8 bottles of Ohio wine while at the wineries and another 5.6 bottles for take home.

Ohio's wine industry is responsible for $30 million of annual revenue for Ashtabula, Geauga, and Lake counties, all of which are located along Interstate 90 between Cleveland and Erie, Pennsylvania. These counties represent about 65 percent of the state's wine production, according to Ohio Wine Producers Association executive director, Donniella Winchell. The remaining wineries in the state are concentrated on the Lake Erie resort islands and along the Ohio River, near Cincinnati, she said.
