MAUI, HI – My mom, sister, and I booked a guided tour that takes you to the top of Mount Haleakala to watch the sunrise. Our bus driver picked us up at our condominium at 3:00 am. Then, we took a long, extremely steep and curvy road to the top, where there is a lookout area to watch the sunrise. It was so cold -- about 40 degrees before the sunrise that day. But some mornings can be closer to 30. Once the sun finally rises, it warms up quite a bit. When the sun has fully risen above the clouds, the park ranger greets the sun with a Hawaiian chant and tells the crowd, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." Our tour group then continued to drive up to the summit of the volcano, where you can look out and see the other islands around you.
