AT&T: No Early MMS for iPhones
MCLEAN, VA – The Internet on Monday was rife with buzz that multimedia messaging services (MMS) are now available to Apple iPhone users, two weeks ahead of AT&T’s planned rollout of the much anticipated application. But, alas, that’s not true, says AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel. “Sept. 25 is still the date” that MMS will be officially available to iPhone users, he says. “We can’t comment on what people might be doing” to get MMS in the meantime.
AT&T, the exclusive U.S. distributor of the iPhone, has taken a beating in the blogosphere for taking so long to roll out MMS, which allows users to attach video clips, pictures and such to email messages. On Sept. 25 -- which is about two weeks from now -- AT&T will roll out a software update so that will enable MMS for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers.
That some iPhone users have figured out how to get MMS early isn’t surprising. iPhone owners have proven to be remarkably creative. The iPhone is only available to AT&T customers, for example, but that hasn’t stopped hundreds of thousands from “jailbreaking’ their devices so they can use T-Mobile. (AT&T and T-Mobile use the same “GSM” wireless technology.) Customers who do so void the warranty on their devices.
