The Flag Must Fly
ARLINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA Ð Also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, the United States Marine Corp War Memorial is a powerful national monument dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives to the country since November 1775. Located outside Arlington Cemetery, the statue's six 32-foot soldiers raise the 60-foot bronze flagpole. By proclamation from President John F. Kennedy in 1961, the flag at the top of the pole must fly at full mast 24 hours a day, one of the few official sites where this is required.
