The "Tower of the Plains" Can Be Seen for Miles

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA Ð Often called the "Tower of the Plains," The Nebraska State Capitol is the third Capitol building to be built on this site. Constructed from Indiana limestone and completed in 1932, the building has the distinction of being the nation's first statehouse to radically depart from the prototypical form of the nation's Capitol and to use a functional office tower.
Located on the West Plaza, the Standing Abraham Lincoln Sculpture (pictured here) was created by Daniel Chester French and Henry Bacon and depicts Lincoln bearing the burdens of the Civil War. The bronze statue stands on a pedestal with the Gettysburg Address carved into the Rhode Island granite backdrop. Dedicated in 1912 by William Jennings Bryan, the statue is the only structure on the grounds that predates the Capitol building. The two artists later collaborated in 1922 to produce the seated Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.
