An Expansive Territory
JUNEAU, ALASKA - Sitting about 3 miles north of Juneau, Lake Mendenhall is a peaceful, fresh water lake fed by the Mendenhall Glacier (center left), Steep Creek and Nugget Creek via Nugget Falls (right). For perspective, those falls - formed from Nugget Glacier - drop a total of 377 feet and are 100 feet wide at the base. The hiking trails around the lake, getting close to the glacier and leading to Nugget Falls, are popular. Guided canoe tours are ideal for enjoying a quiet trip around the lake. Kayaking is available for experienced kayakers. The trails and tours range from moderately easy to very adventurous.
