Banderas Bay
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Bahía de Banderas (Banderas Bay) is the third largest bay in Mexico, and some would say the prettiest. The two larger ones are the Bay of Campeche (Vera Cruz) and Sebastián Vizcaíno Bay (Baja California). It is a deep-water bay (4,711 at its deepest point), making it rich in seafood and easy for cruise ship traffic. It has 65 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline divided between two Mexican states. The extra-marital exploits of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton during the filming of John Huston’s “The Night of the Iguana” brought international attention to Puerto Vallarta, once a sleepy fishing village. Today, Puerto Vallarta is a major travel destination, especially for winter visitors. Film trivia: Elizabeth Taylor was not in “The Night of the Iguana.”
