SARASOTA, Florida – Sunshine streams into the chandelier-accented interior of Ca’ d’Zan (“House of John”), the waterfront home of John and Mable Ringling of circus and art-collecting fame. The Ringlings’ many trips to Europe to acquire circus acts and art led to their love of Venice and ultimately resulted in construction of their own palace. The architectural style is Venetian Gothic. The 36,000-square-foot house is on a waterfront site that is 1,000 feet long. It has five stories and (a Florida surprise) a full basement. The mansion is a major attraction at The Ringling, which also includes the Ringling Circus Museum, the Ringling Museum of Art and the Historic Asolo Theater. Extra treasures are the Bayfront Gardens and Mable Ringling’s Rose Garden. (Photo by Tom Adkinson)
