Still Watching After All These Years
CAPE ELIZABETH, MAINE - One of the most photographed and most famous lighthouses – called the Portland Head Light – stands in Fort Williams Park. Majestically overlooking the ocean where it has served since 1791, the 80-foot tower is still active in navigation. The Keepers' Quarters were constructed in 1891 but abandoned in 1989 when the lighthouse became automated. Today, visitors can see lighthouse lenses and interpretative displays in the award-winning Museum at Portland Head Light which is housed in the former Keepers' Quarters and pick up gifts at the seasonal shop. Within its 90 acres, Fort Williams Park offers more panoramic ocean views, hiking trails, picnic and recreational areas and historic structures. Photo by Jeff Gardiner.
