JAMESTOWN, VIRGINIA - Overlooking the James River, the statue of Captain John Smith stands at Jamestown Rediscovery, the original site of the first permanent English settlement in America. Since 1994, Jamestown Rediscovery has been an archaeological project tasked with excavating, interpreting, perserving, conserving and researching the historic site. Included in the 22.5-acre property are the site of the original 1607 James Fort, statue with story of Pocahontas, the seventeenth-century church (pictured background right), statehouse, Jamestown Research Center and the Archaearium, a fascinating archaeology museum.
