A Thriving Ancient Forest

A Thriving Ancient Forest

MILL VALLEY, CALIFORNIA - About 20 million years ago, Coast redwoods began growing in coastal California. Although redwoods can live to be 2,200 years old, the trees in Muir Woods are relatively young. The oldest tree is 777 years old – not 1,500 years old as originally thought and not as old as the redwoods in Northern California. In 1908, this forest became federally protected as a National Monument. Now a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the 558-acre Muir Woods National Monument is a favorite destination for visitors to the San Francisco area. When visiting, plan to spend several hours exploring the park. You can hike parts or all of the 6-mile trail system through the ancient forest among the towering redwood trees beside Redwood Creek on your own, attend a ranger-led program to learn about redwood ecology and cultural history or take a guided tour, as available. Note: Reservations are required for all vehicles and shuttle riders visiting Muir Woods National Monument.
