Gateway to a Gigantic Outdoor Playground

CANTON, KENTUCKY - A new bridge over Lake Barkley in western Kentucky that opened in the fall of 2018 is a major access point to Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL), a 170,000-acre outdoor playground shared by Kentucky and Tennessee. LBL is a rectangle of land between Lake Barkley on the Cumberland River and Kentucky Lake on the Tennessee River. It has 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline, 500 miles of trails, developed and rustic camping facilities, a working farmstead from the 1850s and because of its remoteness, an astronomical observatory. Three of Kentucky's famous resort state parks are on the fringes of LBL, which is administered by the USDA Forest Service. The bridge carries U.S. 68 and KY 80.
