Google Just Launched a New Tool to Track Hotel Prices – Here’s How It Works

Google's new hotel price tracking tool allows travelers to sign up for email alerts.

Google is making it easier to save money when booking hotels with a new feature allowing travelers to set price alerts for their favorite properties.

The new tool, which the tech company rolled out on Friday, allows travelers to track prices at individual hotels right on their desktop or phone. The feature works much like flight alerts, enabling travelers to sign up for email alerts if the price significantly changes.

The tool was previously available on a city level to show city-wide price trends, but is now available on a property-by-property basis, Google shared with Travel + Leisure.

"If your heart is set on a certain hotel, this'll make it much easier to jump on those price drops and land a great deal for your next summer getaway," Craig Ewer, a spokesperson for Google, told T+L.

To sign up for these alerts, travelers must be signed in to their account and search a specific hotel by name. They must then tap the new price tracking toggle, which can be found on a desktop browser or under the “prices” tab on a mobile browser. Vacationers will then receive email alerts if rates change significantly during their chosen dates, according to Google.

Hotel price tracking is also available directly through Google hotels with the price tracking toggle visible on either the “overview” or “prices” tab.

Google said price tracking is available around the world in both English and Spanish.

In addition to hotels, Google offers several price-saving features when booking flights. Travelers can use the “explore” tool to see wallet-friendly city combinations on the map, use the date grid and price graph to see how rates change, take advantage of the company’s real-time insights to understand if a fare is higher or lower than usual, and look to the “cheapest” tab to see the absolute lowest flight rates. Travelers can also set price alerts for their desired flights.

In addition to setting alerts, travelers can save on hotel reservations by being strategic about when they book. Inventory may not be as plentiful, but travelers can maximize savings by booking last minute. Staying longer, looking for package deals, and being very flexible with your stay dates can also add up to big savings.

Signing up for hotel loyalty programs is also a budget-friendly option since these programs are free to join and offer a variety of redemption opportunities and perks. These are offered by major brands like World of Hyatt, Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and more.
