ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO - We are on one of the hiking trails to the dormant Albuquerque Volcanoes, also known as the Three Sisters, in the Petroglyph National Monument, just west of downtown Albuquerque. Formed by eruptions about 156,000 to 190,000 years ago, these cones provide beautiful views of the city with the Sandia Mountains in the background. Along with these ancient rock formations is a story waiting to be told. We are standing in a geologic area known as the Rio Grande Rift which includes the volcanoes, Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley. Geophysical forces are slowly at work here, changing this terrain. Future generations will know taller Sandia Mountains and a wider, deeper Rio Grand Valley.
