RetrievAir is redefining air travel by allowing pets to fly in the cabin alongside their owners, offering a stress-free experience for both.
“It was the quietest flight I've ever been on,” said Steve Harmon, a passenger who traveled with his dog.
Harmon explained that traveling with his dog has often been stressful. “Having the dog as a nervous traveler, let's just say, to be with us was instrumental towards making it a carefree trip,” he said.
RetrievAir eliminates the need for pets to travel in the cargo hold, giving them a seat in the cabin. “This was the first chance I've had to fly with the dog because we never want to go underneath with the rest of the baggage,” Harmon said. “That would be a traumatic experience with a dog.”
Mark Williams, co-founder and senior aviation adviser for RetrievAir, said the airline was designed with pets and their owners in mind. “We've really thought about a calm environment, a safe environment, a comfortable environment for the dog and their pet parent as well,” Williams said.
The stress-free experience begins before boarding. “There's security here before you board, but it's very much less invasive. Obviously, there are no big lines, and you're not walking through a terminal for miles to get to your gate. All of those things cause extra stress, and we're trying to eliminate all those stress points,” Williams said.
Passengers board from a private terminal and head directly onto the tarmac, simplifying the process. “It's less stressful. Also, coming into the terminal is easy. There's no complexity to being able to check in. It's not like taking a commercial flight,” said passenger Rochelle Cantor.
Even in-flight service caters to pets. “The best part is the dog is getting a dog snack, too,” Harmon said.
RetrievAir’s concept gained national attention when the company appeared on “Shark Tank.” During the show, the team pitched their idea, saying, “We believe your furry friend doesn’t belong in the cargo hold like a suitcase; they belong in the seat right next to you.”
The pitch resulted in a deal with Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit. “We were very fortunate that we got a deal with Alexis Ohanian,” Williams said.
Currently in Florida, RetrievAir operates flights out of Tampa and Fort Lauderdale, but expansion plans are being considered. “I think Naples would be a really good additional point,” Williams said.
