HIGHLANDS, NORTH CAROLINA - Just looking at this beautiful view, you may feel like you are deep within the woods of the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina. In reality, you are in the woods of the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina at the end of a hiking trail but only a mile from downtown Highlands at an elevation of about 4,100 feet. On one side of the mountain is the well-known Sunset Rock, a rocky cliff overlooking the town. Just a few steps away on the other side of the peak is Sunrise Rock where you can enjoy panoramic views of the rolling hills, waterfalls in the distance and a beautiful sunrise, if your timing is right.
