The 10 Most Visited Countries Worldwide in 2026

The list of the most visited countries in the world barely changes from year to year, as the same small group of nations dominates the international arrivals rankings with little competition. The criterion here is international tourist arrivals, the figure calculated by UN Tourism. The 10 countries below are the most visited countries in the world as we approach the end of 2026. Presented by Tourism Review.

10/ Austria – Ski Slopes and Culture Draw a Broad Audience

Austria hosts nearly 30 million international visitors a year: roughly half are drawn by the country’s cultural attractions, centered on Vienna, and half by its alpine sports, found in the western provinces and lasting from December through February. This is an advantage: there is little overlap between these two halves of Austria’s appeal, and the country has two peak seasons rather than one.

Vienna has a large pool of potential visitors: the architecture of the Habsburg period, including the Hofburg Palace, Schönbrunn Palace, the Museum of Art History, and the Vienna State Opera, still draws crowds. This is enhanced by the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert, which is broadcast to audiences around the world on 1 January. The province of Tyrol, along with Vorarlberg and Salzburg, has the skiing infrastructure to feed into this stream of visitors. St. Anton, Kitzbühel, and Ischgl are all well-known ski resorts, and Innsbruck still has the legacy of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics.

A specialist market exists in Salzburg for Mozart’s legacy: the city is the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location of The Sound of Music. It also hosts the Salzburg Festival, which has an audience of theater and opera-goers distinct from either the skiers or the visitors to Vienna.

9/ Greece - Islands and Antiquities Draw International Visitors

Greece hosts more than 30 million international visitors a year, apportioned roughly between the archaeological sites around Athens and the island tourism economy, which extends from the Aegean Sea to the Ionian Sea. The two halves of Greece’s appeal operate on different calendars and have little to do with one another.

The Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens, along with the Acropolis Museum, are the cultural spine of the mainland, but they share billing with Delphi, Olympia, and Knossos in Crete: Greece has more archaeological attractions of international interest than almost any other country. This gives Athens a pull at the beginning and end of the year, when the island season is closed and domestic traffic is reduced.

Santorini and Mykonos dominate the island half of the equation, in part because they have acquired brand recognition beyond their size and resources. They also have limits: much of Santorini’s fresh water supply comes from a desalination plant, and the narrow streets of the cliffside villages have forced cruise ships to restrict embarkations and disembarkations to specific periods in the summer. Greece has begun to charge a fee to cruise tourists visiting either island in the summer. Larger islands such as Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu have their own airports, but the smaller islands still have ferry connections from Piraeus.

The seasonality is a vulnerability: most visitor spend occurs between May and September, and tourism is a sector that Greece has invested in heavily during the debt crisis of the 2010s and beyond. This has included the maintenance and improvement of ferry and airport connections to the islands: the investment has continued to pay dividends, and Greece has maintained its position near the top of the international arrivals list.

8/ Germany – Balancing Business and Cultural Tourism

Germany hosts around 35 million international visitors a year, and a large proportion of them are there for work. The country’s trade fairs in Frankfurt, Cologne, Hanover, and Düsseldorf fill hotels in these cities and surrounding areas during months when attractions elsewhere in the world are inaccessible due to weather or closed borders.

This unusual mix gives Germany an appeal that differs from the other destinations on this list. Hannover Messe, the world’s largest industrial fair, takes place in Hannover in the spring, but the Frankfurt Book Fair in October and Gamescom in Cologne in August also contribute to the mix. Berlin is popular with a younger visitor base interested in its nightlife, the visual arts, and its 20th-century history. Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has five major museums within walking distance on the Spree River. Munich is the third pillar of Germany’s tourism economy: Oktoberfest, which runs from the end of August through early October, is the biggest beer festival in the world, and the region around it has the most ski resorts in the country.

7/ The United Kingdom – Attracting Visitors despite a Strong Pound

The United Kingdom hosts around 38 million international visitors a year, with a large proportion concentrated in London, which is among the most visited cities in the world. The pound is strong against other currencies, but arrivals continue to rise.

London has a unique asset: two overlapping tourist economies, one focused on its cultural collections, the other on its financial and commercial reputation. The permanent collection museums, including the British Museum, the National Gallery, and Tate Modern, are free; West End theaters put on an uninterrupted season of performances; and the City of London and Canary Wharf keep their offices open year-round, providing occupation for hotels outside the summer months.

Edinburgh is the second-largest tourist draw, with its festivals: the Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe fill the city to capacity in the summer. Bath is a short train ride from London, and the Scottish Highlands and Lake District are alternatives to the coastal travel available elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom’s status as a tourist destination has been transformed since Brexit. Passports from the EU are now processed in a different lane at the border and require additional documents. The United Kingdom has imposed an Electronic Travel Authorization for all visa-exempt passports, and these changes affect different segments of the international visitor market. The discretionary spent by long-haul visitors declines the most, since they were the ones who stayed in the country the longest, but the pound’s strength continues to be a limitation. It is a combination that puts the United Kingdom in the range of the world’s top 10 most visited countries.

6/ Mexico - Proximity to the U.S. Drives the Numbers

Mexico hosts more than 40 million international visitors a year, overwhelmingly from one country: a land border with the United States and year-round direct flights from North American cities create a captive audience.

The Riviera Maya resort area from Cancún through Playa del Carmen to Tulum is the most recognizable segment of this flow, but it represents only a part of a larger current. Cancún International Airport serves dozens of North American destinations, and the all-inclusive properties stretch the length of the coast. Those who want to avoid direct flights, long driving distances, or high hotel costs have other options, beginning with Mexico City.

Mexico City has museums and history that draw culture-focused visitors. The National Museum of Anthropology has the Aztec Sunstone and the richest collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts in the country, and the Frida Kahlo Museum is in the building where she died in 1954. The food ranges from street tacos to haute cuisine, and the altitude keeps temperatures mild year-round.

Organized-crime-related violence is a concern for some visitors, but it is limited to specific zones. Most tourist attractions fall under the lowest risk category.

This is another factor in Mexico’s appeal: the peso-dollar exchange rate keeps prices lower than in the United States, and shorter flight times from Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami make it a convenient weekend destination as well. It is a combination that propels Mexico toward the top of the list.

5/ Turkey – Spanning Two Continents

Turkey hosts around 55 million international visitors in a typical year, placing it among the world’s most visited countries. Its appeal is broad: it is cheap for most visitors, with a lira that has lost value against the euro, the dollar, and the pound, and it has beaches and cosmopolitan centers, with a border with both Europe and Asia.

The capital, Istanbul, is a draw in its own right, being located on the Bosphorus and providing ferry access to Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar. The lira has also reduced costs: a foreigner accustomed to paying in euros or dollars finds that a Turkish lira buys more, whether in hotel rooms, restaurants, or domestic flights within the country. This has fueled a rise in international tourism, as visitors compare Turkey to other Mediterranean destinations such as Greece or Spain.

The combination is unique in the industry. All-inclusive resorts in Antalya and along the Turquoise Coast cater to charter groups from Germany, the United Kingdom, and Russia, but Cappadocia in the center of Turkey has created a product around its geography: sunrise hot-air balloon rides over Göreme and the surrounding rock formations draw visitors year-round. The Aegean coast has ancient Roman ruins at Ephesus and the white travertine formations of Pamukkale.

4/ Italy - History Contributes to Its Popularity

Italy hosts nearly 57 million international visitors a year, putting it in the world’s top five. Rome, Venice, and Florence dominate this number, but Italy’s long coastline from the Amalfi Coast near Naples to the beaches of Sardinia and Sicily fill in the rest of the list.

Rome is iconic in part because its history is compressed: a visitor can walk from the Colosseum to the Roman Forum to the Vatican City, with St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel inside, in a matter of days. This makes a three-day stop or a longer stay en route to another destination feasible, and it is a feature that differentiates Italy from other high-volume tourist destinations. Italy also has the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites of any country, and they are distributed evenly throughout the country rather than concentrated in a single location like Rome, Florence, or Venice. This provides a second and third visit value that other destinations on this list lack.

Italy’s other regions provide variety: Tuscany is a wine-producing region that draws visitors in the fall, the Dolomites draw skiers and hikers in the winter months, and Sicily is finding attention from overseas markets after filming the second season of The White Lotus in Taormina.

3/ USA - Broad Appeal to International Visitors

The United States appears in the top three most visited countries in the world, with tens of millions of international visitors a year: the volume is large, but visitors are spread thinly, with no single location dominating the total.

This ubiquity is the advantage: New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Orlando each draw a different segment of the foreign tourist market. It becomes a disadvantage at the margins: Orlando, home to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort, has an international visitor base of its own, largely concentrated around the British and Brazilian markets, where Disney and the parks are important tourism draws. The United States’ national parks deliver a fifth attraction: in addition to the urban centers, potential visitors unfamiliar with the domestic political situation might consider Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon.

Visa policies tend to be more important in the United States than in most of the countries on this list. Travelers from the 40 or so Visa Waiver Program countries can apply for an ESTA and be granted entry with little hassle. Everyone else must apply for a visitor visa, and the American consulates in Mumbai, Lagos, and São Paulo have had long lines of would-be travelers since 2020. The ease or difficulty of obtaining a visa affects the volume of arrivals in a given year: those who have applied and been turned away will return home, where they may not resume the process immediately.

The strength of the dollar is a disadvantage to visitors, who must exchange currency at unfavorable rates to pay for hotel rooms, meals, and airfare within the country. This explains part of the United States’ overall slide in international tourism: compared to a few years ago, it is more expensive to visit the country from anywhere outside North America. Canada and Mexico continue to dominate international visitor numbers in the United States, in part because of the volume of visitors from the Mexican side of the border. The United States’ other international visitors come primarily from the United Kingdom and other English-speaking countries, as well as from Spain. Short international trips dominate, but the United States’ scale means that there is room at the top: it hosts the most visitors of any country.

2/ Spain – Blending Coastal Attractions with Cities

Spain is second in international arrivals, with around 85 million visitors in recent years. Mediterranean resorts and Spain’s cities feed into this number equally, with no single draw dominating the traffic.

The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, resort destinations in the Mediterranean Sea and off the northwest coast of Africa, respectively, host an important segment of the beach-bound tourists. Mallorca and Ibiza have regular summer visitors from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Scandinavia, but the Canary Islands, which stay temperate year-round, host a winter sports season at their resorts. This makes Spain a destination at two points in the year, whereas many of its competitors have only a narrow window of opportunity.

Barcelona and Madrid represent the other end of the tourist spectrum, with visitors drawn to their architectural and cultural heritage. The Sagrada Família and Park Güell, both by Antoni Gaudí, are major attractions in the former, and Madrid’s Museum Corridor puts the Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza on a single walkable route. Each region has its gastronomic specialties, from the pintxos of San Sebastián to the tapas of Cádiz, and the distance between these centers creates a natural tourism circuit that spans far beyond the coasts.

The overall volume has disrupted local housing markets, fueling a backlash. Barcelona’s municipal government imposes a visitor tax on top of the regional Catalonia tax and has taken steps to limit short-term apartment rentals. Similar restrictions have followed in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, where visitors have fueled local protests over housing and crowding. Some municipalities have restricted new hotel construction and short-term apartment rentals. The position among the most visited countries has its price.

1/ France - The World’s Leading Tourist Destination

France has been first in international arrivals for decades, with nearly 100 million foreign visitors every year in recent years. The pattern is unlikely to change in 2026: France has such a large and consistent advantage that its dominance of the rankings seems inevitable.

The appeal is broad enough that it could extend the list considerably, but Paris remains the main draw, with the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and the Notre-Dame cathedral, which reopened in December 2024 after its 2019 fire. Disneyland Paris, located east of the capital in Marne-la-Vallée, appeals to a different set of visitors.

The pattern extends beyond the capital: France’s ability to spread visitors throughout the year also contributes to its overall dominance. The Côte d’Azur and the Provence region host summer visitors, but the Loire Valley castles and the wine regions around Bordeaux are popular in the shoulder seasons, and the ski resorts around Chamonix and the Three Valleys cater to winter sports enthusiasts. Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy and the D-Day landing beaches draw an eclectic but consistent year-round following. France’s mix of transport options, varied geography, and attractions with broad appeal helps explain the country’s position at the top of the list.
