I’ve been lucky enough to sail on over 50 cruises around the world, from the Caribbean to South America, to the Mediterranean and Iceland—and one thing that all of the best cruises have in common is exceptional dining. If you’re a food lover looking for creative and diverse dining experiences at sea, you’re in luck. Cruises, whether they are family-friendly or over-the-top luxury sailings, are bringing their A-game to onboard restaurants and lounges.
While I’ll never say no to unlimited poolside soft-serve paired with a movie on the Jumbotron, some of the best cruise food I’ve ever had also includes a Mexican feast from an onboard guest chef, Spanish tapas and house-made lobster paella, and celebrity chef-inspired cheeseburgers with a range of extra toppings for complete customization.
So if you’re a culinary connoisseur looking forward to unique dining experiences at sea, these five cruise lines are worth your vacation dollars.
Best For Adventurous Adults: Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages is known for its adults-only cruises, with well-balanced itineraries that mix fun and wellness. It’s also known for an exceptional dining program—restaurants onboard are akin to the hotspots you’d find on land, and (aside from a few upcharge dishes), everything is included in your fare.
I recently sailed on the Brilliant Lady, where I had the opportunity to dine at several of the onboard restaurants over the course of five days. The standout was Rojo by Razzle Dazzle, featuring Spanish tapas and larger shareable plates. The highlights included perfectly fried jamón croquetas, succulent braised oxtail with Mahón cheese on crostini, and lobster paella (a $70 upcharge serving 2-4), with perfectly cooked rice that created the crispy socarrat on the bottom.
Across its fleet, Virgin serves some of the best ice cream and pizza at sea. At The Pizza Place, personal-sized pizzas are fired to order—I love the white pizza studded with golden, roasted garlic. Next door, Lick Me Til…Ice Cream rotates flavors throughout the voyage; my favorites include orange ricotta, key lime pie, and chocolate hazelnut.
Best For Luxury Cruisers: Silversea
Luxury Lines like Siversea (part of the Royal Caribbean family of cruise lines) are taking dining up a notch across its fleet. I recently sailed on Silver Dawn for two weeks as the ship started its 2026 world cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Lima, Peru. Over the 14-night escapade, I was able to try all the restaurants onboard, from a jazz club serving tapas-style dishes paired with live jazz, to an outdoor grill where I could cook my dinner on hot rocks.
My favorite onboard dining experience was La Terrazza, an Italian restaurant with a rotating menu of house-made pastas and seafood. One evening, I enjoyed a bowl of pasta tossed in a bright basil pesto, and on another night I devoured a bowl of sumptuous cacio e pepe. Even better, each meal started with a shareable charcuterie board featuring a handful of cured meats, cheeses, and traditional accompaniments.
And the dining experiences aren’t limited to the restaurants onboard. Silversea is known for its dedicated butler service, where a butler is assigned to each cabin. On a warm afternoon, my butler set up a full caviar service in my cabin, which was ultra luxurious. Another day, truffle popcorn was delivered to my room to enjoy while I watched the NFL playoff games.
Best For Casual Dining: Carnival Cruise Line
There’s nothing better than a cruise-ship cheeseburger with endless ocean views—and Carnival Cruise Line does it best, thanks to its partnership with celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Guy’s Burger Joint is on every Carnival ship, included in your fare, and is one of the most popular dining spots onboard. Fleet-wide, they make nearly 30,000 burgers a day!
Burgers are smashed to order, then loaded with your choice of toppings—from Super Melty Cheese and Guy’s Bourbon and Brown Sugar BBQ sauce to more traditional toppings like cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. My favorite is the Piggy Patty: a traditional smash burger topped with a crispy bacon patty, cheese, and onions.
For more casual eats from the Mayor of Flavortown, hit Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse/Brewhouse, serving smoked BBQ and classic sides. It even features a menu of craft beers brewed on board. The casual dining spot is available on select ships—Carnival Celebration, Horizon, Jubilee, Panorama, and Mardi Gras—and it's worth seeking out. Dinner at Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse has an upcharge, but lunch is included with your fare.
Best For Specialty Restaurants: Celebrity Cruises
With up to 32 places to eat and drink on Celebrity’s Edge Series ships, you’ll never go hungry. I sailed on Celebrity Ascent, and it’s a goldmine for food lovers. There are four main dining rooms plus four complimentary venues onboard, so you don’t have to spend more money if you don’t want to—but where Celebrity really shines is its specialty restaurants. They are an added cost, but they are worth it for the high-quality food, excellent service, and overall exceptional experience.
My favorite is Raw on 5, highlighting Japanese seafood dishes and expertly rolled sushi. The signature sushi roll, named after the ship, combines crispy soft-shell crab, avocado, and masago for a few incredible bites. Larger plates, such as pork belly skewers with a sweet mustard-honey glaze and a crispy Asian chicken salad with a creamy honey-wasabi dressing, round out the menu.
Then there’s Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, exclusive to Celebrity Beyond, Ascent, and its newest ship, Xcel. The intimate restaurant features global flavors inspired by the chef’s travels: roast beet and carrot salad with farro and tahini dressing, lobster and zucchini risotto with cherry tomato confit, and filet mignon with black truffle sauce. Even better, the restaurant is the first cruise ship restaurant to earn five stars from Forbes Travel Guide.
Best For Families: Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line is renowned for its family-friendly atmosphere, especially in its dining options. Think crowd-pleasers like chicken tenders with fan-favorite honey mustard and pool-deck pizza, plus exceptional dinners in the three main dining rooms you rotate through each evening on every ship.
For Disney foodies, the best pick is Disney Destiny, where the food at the included restaurants shines: 1923 (the Alameda porcini-spiced ahi tuna appetizer is a must-get) and Pride Lands: Feast of the Lion King (Cape Malay shrimp curry is my favorite). Up on the pool deck, Donald’s Cantina is a popular poolside quick-service restaurant, where you can build-your-own tacos, burritos, or rice bowls. And on one special morning each sailing, you can head to Marceline Market for the decadent Mickey churro waffles.
And when it’s time for adults to sneak away, Palo Steakhouse is the spot. The adults-only restaurant serves an exceptional brunch, featuring Italian classics like lasagna and parmesan-crusted chicken, as well as egg dishes and Mickey waffles, accompanied by the best almond croissant I’ve ever had. At dinner, expect cooked-to-order steaks and pastas, and don’t leave without getting the tiramisu—it’ll transport you straight to Italy.
