The list includes some of the largest airports by passenger traffic, land area, and number of flights.


Thanks to its population, economy, and industrialization, the United States possesses one of the largest commercial aviation markets. The country is home to the largest airports and airlines. Simple Flying compiled a list of the largest airports in the United States by number of flights in 2024.

The data is based on information from FlightsFrom.com and shows an average number of daily flights scheduled for this year.

5. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)

Number five on our list is North Carolina's Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), offering on average 672 daily flights in 2024. Located just miles from the city’s central district, it is the primary airport for commercial and military use in the Charlotte Metropolitan Area.

Opened in 1935, the airport was named the 11th-busiest airport in the United States by passenger traffic in 2019. CLT is a major hub for American Airlines, with the carrier having nearly 70% of the market share. In 2022, the airport saw over 48 million passengers pass through its doors with over half a million aircraft movements.

Opened in 1944, the airport is a major hub for American Airlines and United Airlines. The airport is also a focus city for Polar Air Cargo for its freight services. In 2022, the airport saw over 68 million passengers pass through its doors, with more than 711,500 aircraft movements.

Located approximately 25 miles (40 km) from downtown Denver, the airport is a central hub for United Airlines. The airport also serves as an operating base for Frontier Airlines and Southwest Airlines. In 2022, the airport saw over 69 million passengers pass through its doors with more than 615,700 aircraft movements.

The airport is the world’s second-largest single hub, serving American Airlines.

Opened in 1973, the airport serves as the operating base for Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines. In 2022, the airport saw over 73 million passengers pass through its doors, with more than 656,600 aircraft movements.

Opened in 1926, the airport serves as the operating base for Frontier Airlines, Southwest, and Spirit Airlines. In 2023, the airport saw nearly 105 million passengers pass through its doors with more than 579,300 aircraft movements.
