The American Horse

The American Horse

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – “Massive” barely describes “The American Horse,” the work of Japanese-American sculptor Nina Akamu, who was inspired by a never-realized project Leonardo da Vinci designed for the Duke of Milan in the late 1400s. This 24-foot-tall bronze is a major attraction at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids. Fred Meijer advocated for the sculpture, and two bronze casts were made in the late 1990s – one for Meijer Gardens and one as a gift to Milan. The 158-acre Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is one of the top 45 most visited art museums in the world and the 30 most visited art museums in the U.S., according to The Art Newspaper.
