Winter is gearing up to arrive with a vengeance with above-normal snowfall predicted to hit major ski destinations across the country, including in California, Utah, and Colorado.

The snowy forecast is thanks to a “potentially historic, super El Niño,” according to weather forecasting platform OpenSnow. An active southern storm track, which the company said is favored during strong El Niño winters, could result in above-normal precipitation on the West Coast, in the Southwest, across the Southern Plains, in the Southeast, and on the East Coast.

“When it comes to skiing, it’s all about timing,” Alan Smith, a meteorologist at OpenSnow, wrote in the forecast. “Booking a trip 7 [to] 10 days in advance and for a general area that looks stormy will increase your chances of scoring the best conditions.”

In Colorado, above-normal snowfall totals are expected in both the southern and eastern parts of the state, boosting resorts like Telluride and Winter Park. However, ski areas across the northern and central parts of the state (like the popular Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail, and Aspen) have less of a clear path to pow days.

In nearby Utah, above-average snowfall is expected across both northern Utah along with the state as a whole. That’s especially true for Park City, which Smith wrote had “one of the strongest correlations with above-normal snowfall during the strongest El Nino events.”

California and Nevada are similarly expected to see above-normal snow conditions with the strongest signals predicting a snowy winter across the Central Sierra, including for Mammoth Mountain.

“One thing to keep in mind is that strong El Nino years tend to be warmer with an active subtropical jet stream,” Smith wrote about California. “This means that while major snow events can occur, warm atmospheric rivers that bring rain and high snow levels to the mountains can also occur.”

The forecast isn’t quite as positive for some other parts of the country, like New England, New York, Montana, and Washington state, where below-normal snowfall totals are predicted. On the East Coast, strong El Nino winters tend to result in “above-normal temperatures and below-normal snowfall.” And in the Pacific Northwest, snowfall similarly tends to be affected by warm temperatures associated with the phenomenon.

For the best bet, Smith said travelers should plan trips to Washington and New England ski resorts in January.

Up north, Smith wrote Canadian resorts in both British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies are also expected to have a less than stellar year, “but occasionally there are years that buck the trend and bring near to above average snowfall to some parts of this region.
