Transport and Health Risks Top Business Traveller Concerns, New Survey Finds

Findings highlight how evolving risks and information gaps are driving demand for clearer, more proactive employer support

New research from BCD Travel highlights transport incidents and health-related issues as the leading concerns for business travellers worldwide, underscoring the need for stronger travel risk management (TRM) strategies.

The survey of 1,284 business travellers found that 37% cited transportation accidents as their primary concern, followed by health emergencies at 35%. Crime and natural disasters were also significant worries, each mentioned by around one-third of respondents. Over the past year, 8% of travellers experienced an incident requiring company support, with weather-related disruptions accounting for nearly a quarter of cases.

Despite these risks, confidence in managed travel programmes remains high. The study revealed that 86% of travellers feel safe staying in company-approved hotels, while more than 70% view ground transport options, including taxis and ride-hailing services, as safe.

However, gaps in awareness persist. Nearly one-third of respondents do not know where to access company safety information, and 30% are unsure whom to contact during an emergency. Additionally, 18% hesitate to seek assistance due to uncertainty about the seriousness of their situation.

The findings emphasise the importance of employer engagement in mitigating risk. While 66% of travellers rate company support during incidents highly, demand for clearer communication and pre-trip information remains strong.

“The research shows travellers want clarity, not complexity,” Jorge Mesa, BCD’s Senior Director of Travel Risk Management, said. “When people get simple guidance at the right moment, they feel more confident on the road.”

According to a recent Zurich report, disruption has “become the norm” for business travellers.
