Where the Buffalo Roam
JAMESTOWN, NORTH DAKOTA – From I-94, travelers can see one of the Midwest’s most popular roadside attractions – Dakota Thunder, a 60-ton sculpture of an American Bison made of cement, stucco and steel. Created by Elmer Petersen in 1959, the 26-foot sculpture carries the title of the “World’s Largest Buffalo Monument.” Looking out over the prairie grasses of Jamestown – aka The Buffalo City – where a live herd of buffalo still roams, the monument is connected to Frontier Village. This village recreates a 19th-century prairie town with a collection of historic buildings and attractions, including the National Buffalo Museum which explains the role of buffalo in American history.
